Chapter 19

I was already exhausted after a very busy and frustrating day at work. That wasn’t the only reason I dragged my feet as I walked up to the front door of the Howard home. Unlike almost every other time I’d rung the doorbell at this house, I was not excited to be here. The very first time was last summer when Scamp, the cute little dachshund I was looking after for the Cummings family next door, had destroyed a decorative pillow from this front porch, and I’d come to confess and apologize. Austin and I weren’t together at the time, but I knew this house belonged to his parents and that he was staying here. Lucky for me, he hadn’t been home at the time and Richard, Austin’s dad, had been more than kind.

Today a very tasteful wreath of green pine and red berries hung in the middle of the door. A lovely swag of evergreen surrounded the frame, accentuated with three big red bows. I rang the doorbell knowing Austin’s ex-girlfriend was living here with him now.

Okay, not really living with him, but staying with his family. They were the most generous people ever, so it shouldn’t have surprised me. They knew Ivy from before when she and Austin had been a couple. They liked her, and she had no one. Of course, they would step up and help her.

That didn’t mean I had to like it.

Before I knew who she was and what she’d meant to Austin, I felt very sympathetic toward Ivy and admired the fact that she was such a strong mother who was determined to do the best she could for her child. I actually liked her.

Okay. I could be a mature adult. Any jealous or uncomfortable feelings regarding her and Austin would have to be swept aside. Ivy was still a likable person who had gone through some extremely difficult experiences. I had to admit that I still admired her. At least I had until she became the number one suspect in Roger’s murder.

All the evidence pointed very solidly at her. The police were investigating this case. She would be prosecuted and found guilty or innocent by a jury of her peers based on evidence. Even with all of their good intentions and financial resources, the Howards couldn’t change anything. The best I thought they could do was help Ivy pay for a good defense lawyer who might convince a judge and jury to give her some leniency.

While it was true that I had promised Austin I would poke around and see if any other suspects or clues turned up, I wasn’t sure how to do that at the moment. And I didn’t know what he wanted me to come over here and discuss right now.

I had nothing to do with the investigation of the case besides the fact that I was a witness. I’d given Detective Stringer my statement about finding Roger’s body and seeing Ivy run away from the scene. I felt bad for Ivy, but I had to tell the police the truth.
